Revising your Dissertation

Revising the dissertation into a publishable scholarly book, or into publishable articles takes a lot of work — both emotional and actual. You will want a book coach if you are struggling primarily with the emotional side of the revision process, but if you are looking for assistance with the concrete process of the revisions, a dissertation to book consultant is the right choice.

You may have heard that scholarly presses won’t take revised dissertations. This both correct and inaccurate advice; most presses won’t take manuscripts thay can tell were dissertations. A dissertation serves one purpose: to obtain a PhD for the author. It has a minute audience: the dissertation advisor and committee. Its job is to show those few people that you know everything you need to know about your topic and the field in which it is situated to be considered an expert and a scholar among peers. A scholarly book presumes you are the expert, and your voice is essential to the project. Revising the dissertation is an act of re-visioning your research and re-presenting it. That’s a lot, and I can help with that.

  • I can help you set up your timeline, from where you are now to when you need to submit a manuscript (potentially a three or four year process, including the realities of a new job and a full teaching load. Planning is essential!).

  • I can help you shape the book from the dissertation

  • I can help you identify presses for the new monograph and help you with the book proposal process

  • I can also provide assistance and guidance at many other steps along the way.
